A thirteen year-old "poetry prodigy", the distinction confirmed only by her father, had apparently been accepted to UConn and then denied admission over controversial black nationalist poetry. Later, UConn claims she never even applied, leading one to believe that her rabble-rousing father fabricated the story as a means of pushing the oppression narrative.
She does appear very bright and mature, but we have no independent confirmation of her intellectual gifts. We have her animated poetry readings; though her poetry is akin to the spoken-word or slam poetry popular amongst black bloviators. Slam poetry is poetry for (black) people who can't write real poetry, but can talk real good and stuff.
The media's coverage of this story, especially the black media's fawning over it, fits well into the "Great Race Search" for individuals who very much defy racial stereotypes. To name a few: "Great White Defendant", "Great White Terrorist", "Great Muslim Moderate", "Great Asian Athlete", "Great Black Physicist", "Great Black Intellectual", "Great Black Non-Criminal", and "Great Latino Immigrant". When ever one of these appears, the media jumps on it (see Duke Lacrosse, DSK, Jose Antonio Vargas, Toni Morrison, Myron Rolle).

We have ceded coolness to black by and large. It happened in the early 90's when rap became popular. It was good to be from the ghetto, we never used to have "street cred". The eighties were the last decade when it was cool to be white - which might be why so many of us love the 80's.

And at the same time, gangsta rap appears to have died. Not that I am in the hip-hop loop, but the most well-known celebrities are impossible to ignore. Are there any prominent gangsta rappers these days?
It always amazes me (well, not really) that the media will portray a minority as God for the most mundane achievement. I think it's a tacit admission, or completely unknowingly admitting, that that particular person of the race is an extreme exception to the rule.

It's no coincidence that the 80s were also the last decade that mainstream rock music contained any modicum of aggression too. Music for (mostly) white males made by (mostly) white males (beyond a few sub genres which sadly don't have many listeners) is now hopelessly emasculated and/or whiny (even metal is pretty whiny or just so bizarre and anti-social that it is a parody of itself.) It seems the only way white guys can get their testosterone rush on is to listen to rap these days. I wonder if this development was on purpose or just the product of some collective comfortable ennui.
Either way, it is really sad and annoying to be at the gym, and then see white guys lifting weights while listening to loud and obnoxious rap music. It makes me think they are somewhat lacking in self-respect. They will blast it so loud I can't hear my own (better) music on my mp3 player.

About the colonialists, I guess it would it would have been better if those villainous white men had simply left the poor helpless innocent little natives alone. They could have gone on with their "culture" of living in grass huts & eating one another. A good book to read about this is the Conquest of New Spain by Bernal Diaz. He was with Cortes. Many wonderful aspects of Pre-Columbian "culture" can be found therein, things such as the colonialist oppressor Spaniards finding special prisons in every town they entered wherein captives were fattened like cattle so that they would provide a good feast after being sacrificed, walls made entirely of skulls in what is now Mexico City & so on. How horrible that they forced the gentle peace-loving Indians to cease doing what they so loved to do. The stupidity of the average liberal is mind-boggling. If their television told them that the sky was green & that elephants have wings & make regular trips to the moon they'd believe it. After all the talking head on the telly said that it's so.

Well I wasn't really old enough to listen to it myself in the 90s, both the 80s and 90s music listening are my observations a decade or so after the fact (maybe this invalidates my opinion, maybe not). And "Smells Like Teen Spirit" may be aggressive, but it is a whiny and angsty sort of aggression. It doesn't have the same healthy self confidence of 80s music...

I don't know how to address everything with agreement or disagreement, so I'll just bring up the stuff that bothers me.
Race Realist might be more common than perceived as you list that site as evidence, but doesn't mean everything is true. Until I see evidence or some rationality to a cause, the "Asians can't drive" is an anecdotal myth spurred over-recognition of unconnected events.
Unlike some things like Black crime where you can find statistics and other patterns that lend support. What support bad Asian driving? Isn't the other stereotypes of Asians tend to infer that Asians are less like to be recklessly driving? Also, I would imagine insurance companies would love to study something that like, while it would make openly public, such studies would leak out somewhere, like statistics of student performances or crime.
Also, the Great _____ can be meaningful sometimes. Sometimes it is something serious and defiant against a false or possibly false stereotype.

Eighties had aggressive rock, mostly in the hard rock / hairband subgenre. But mainstream pop reached awful depths of beta.
Grunge was aggression turned inward (Nirvana) or poseur-political (REM, Pearl Jam). Though Guns n Roses held on until around 1992.
My high-school-to-college transition happened around 1990. I vividly remember youth culture ceding cool to black pop culture. Everybody took their cues from MTV. Hated it. I had more in common with guys who graduated high school ten years before me than thee tears after me.
Thankfully culture is cyclical and the current cycle is almost over.
PS: country/redneck brand of cool was strong as hell in 1995. Witness. Don't know how it's now. Do they have whiggers in Alabama?

Most middle of the road whites I know (don't care about blacks either way) use black slang ironically. But it's not really mocking blacks so much as just trying to be funny. I don't really know how to explain it but the butt of the joke isn't really blacks.

That's always been true in western culture----the outclass culture is the precursor to what becomes the majority culture's 'cool' culture: think of it as a continuum to the present: Jolson/Sinatra/Presley/Rolling.Stones/Eminem/Bieber, etc. You can argue forever about which generational faction did it best, but all of these designated torchbearers of cool borrowed heavily from black pop style and were called out for doing so; (to be clear, this truth doesn't imply that blacks were 'superior' or more 'original,' but that said style is more primitive, or more generously, 'foundational' a mode of cultural expression.
This isn't imho, and as you contend, a 'concession' ------ but more a continuation of a long-established mode of american cultural expression.
And others too have wondered about why white american culture seems so reliant on black folk expression; to the extent they wondered to the point of creating something that avoids as much, many point to 'punk' or what's referred to as 'alternative' pop styles of the last 40 or so years as a conscientious attempt to create a genuine youth-culture expression that is primarily 'white' ---- or at least not consciously African-american in extending homage to its roots and inspiration.
But for the most part: in America, the founding beacon of pop cool is Louie Armstrong; back home in England, it's Lord Byron ---- the original proto-Goth! :)
Yeah, a lot of rock music these days is pretty nihilistic, whiny, self-hating. More for the depressive loner than the macho braggart. You don't see popular kids listening to rock. Among the more macho type of young man that's looked up to by today's youth, it's all rap all the time.
