Two Spheres of Discourse

A few weeks ago I had a discussion with an older family member ("Adam"). Not sure how it got started, but this is the relevant part:
Adam: When I'm watching boxing, I always root for the guy with less tattoos.
Me: That makes sense. And it's probably why the NBA has been losing popularity recently. The NBA isn't full of guys like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird anymore. It probably started with Allen Iverson. Now the NBA is full of guys like that and the league itself has embraced that type of image. And the general public has trouble relating to the guys they're supposed to root for.
Adam: I see what you mean. I watched the All-Star game stuff and it was so...black. But I'm an old-timer. No one thinks like me anymore.
Me: Well maybe you're wrong and lots more people do think like you.
In other words, Adam presumed that no one shared his "old-timer" conservative viewpoint that eschewed contemporary mass culture. But is he right? Or is Adam underestimating the number of others like him because of what the mainstream institutions push into the public sphere?

I'd say the latter. In essence, there exists two opposing spheres of discourse, one of which leftism dominates and one of which commonsense/conservatism dominates. The first is composed of the mainstream media, academic, government, and corporate conglomerate. The second is composed of the masses outside these institutions, basically just regular people with minds not sullied by leftist doctrine.

The problem for conservatives is that the former group, an assuredly smaller cohort, dictates the behavior of the latter. PC media, academia, and government define what's acceptable and what we're allowed to think or say. These institutions oversee, generally through repetition and peer pressure, the dominant social landscape by championing particular cultural memes. These ideas then become embedded in the social consciousness of the populace.

Yet, I contend that most everyone doesn't buy into the pretty lies of these leftist dominated institutions. No matter the persistence or aggressiveness of the indoctrination, people believe what they see in front of them. They know intelligence exists, that women are more emotional, and that blacks behave differently than whites. We all know it. So how then does Adam casually reject the notion that others agree about tattooed boxers and NBA players? Why does he confidently presume that the masses think differently than he does when I assert the opposite?

Because the leftist-dominated institutions connect people. We have all these people individually thinking the same thing, but they need social sanction to express it. They see the pink elephant, but they want to be certain everyone else sees it before making it a big deal. And yet the edifices that would provide such countenance champion an opposing perspective. The mainstream pushes Lady Gaga instead of Taylor Swift as emblematic of a generation, Allen Iverson as an NBA icon instead of Steve Nash and Tim Duncan, and "urban" as the prevailing cultural trend instead of staid suburbia. The public gets deluged with images of "slut walks" instead of promise rings as empowering, of studying, helping, or "finding oneself" abroad instead of doing that in America, and of female licentiousness instead of motherhood as the ultimate joy.

And people like Adam see these images over and over again, believing that he's just an old-timer who doesn't get it. So slowly he silences himself more as the indoctrination sets in and after awhile, he rejects his own feelings as the obdurate frustration of a fuddy-duddy. He can't fathom, given what media, academia, and government keep telling him, that the person sitting next to him in McDonald's or the guy in line at the DMV think exactly the same way he does. That they hate what's going on too, that they can't believe the tripe they witness everyday.

The leftist cabal divides them even though they stand right next to each other.

Can conservatives ever say that they have ever conserved anything? These days it just gives all the money to the super rich. It does not do diddly squat for the whites who vote Republican. Abortion? Immigration? Gays? These concerns are at the back burner, if not ignored entirely.

Tell Adam he's not alone. When I open a newspaper (yes, I'm old-fashioned and still read newspapers, mainly for the local news and comics, such as "LuAnn"), I throw away the sports section. It's just of no interest to me. Professional sports have become all greed, thuggery, brutality, dysfunctional behavior, strikes and lock-outs. A general "screw the fans" attitude prevails. Big-time college athletics is no better, with a boatload of hypocrisy to go along ("student-athletes" - what a joke, at least at the Division I level). A few schools, such as Duke and Stanford, may buck the trend, but they are very much the exceptions.

Strange... I always thought that the NBA cultivated a bad-boy image, even 20 years ago (vs. the NFL, which cultivated a patriotic-familial one). I suppose that some people are attracted to the former, but the latter is probably the better bet over the long run. (The NHL suffers the same problem... until it has the courage to ban fighting, it will never enjoy more than a niche market in the US.)

Is Iverson an active player today? If so, I'd guess this started with Dennis Rodman c. 1995.

Does Adam truly believe he's a social dinosaur or was he tipping a non-PC toe in the water to gauge your response (which would be prudent, frankly). I often say something slightly (but not too far) off the PC narrative to gauge the response and proceed from there.

Those newspapers that allow comments on stories about black on white crime always show an overwhelming HBD like response from the readers. There are many more of us than the government/media/academic complex would have you believe. And, bottom line, blacks and hispanics are no more "liberal" than we are. They just know from whence their freebies come and vote accordingly. They'll suck the white tax payer until there's nothing left to suck.

Evil times are coming. I'm in my 50s, so I don't know how much of it I'll see, but I can imagine that America will not be a very nice place in 20 or 30 years. Now there are still enough whitopias that you can escape to. 30 years from now, good luck finding one.

Yes, I was going to mention how the Internet has brought people out. Basically any article mentioning race on any site, even places like Slate.com and Salon, gets tons of HBD comments.

Doubt it.

A few days ago he told me blacks are better at basketball because they're less evolved from apes.

One,

Interesting post, but I do think you conflate a couple of important points.

First, while I don't like "tats", their mere existence doesn't necessarily indicate "thugs" (nor are they confined to blacks -- check out the tats on the "Birdman" who plays for the Nuggets).

Second, the NBA has issues, but as long as they cultivate quality talent and push a game that values teamwork as well as athleticism, they will do fine. There was a reason the USA got their a** whupped in the 2004 Olympics by Argentina.

Third, there are plenty of good white players now in the NBA who don't like tats (e.g. Blake Griffin) and plenty of black players with tats who play smart, are hard working, and play great team ball (like my beloved D. Rose of the Chicago Bulls).

Can you tell I love basketball and the NBA?

Finally, I think your broader theme concerning the MSM is true with one important caveat -- while plenty of regular people want wholesome entertainment and buy Taylor Swift records (there is a reason she is so popular after all), there are plenty of regular people who are quite willing to go out and buy Lady Gaga records without being "pushed" -- goofy pop music has always sold well especially when it comes with a big helping of sex. For a Christian like me, this just confirms man's fallen nature, and as a matter of policy I would favor bringing back censorship so that companies are not allowed to pander to our baser instincts. But that's is not a very popular viewpoint, to put it mildly!

To me, tats and said artform's fellow-traveller, body piercing, are symbolic of a rejection of Christian values and culture in favor of an older pagan one. This blog is a good example of the hideous extremes that such defacement of the human body can take.

This I think is at the root of my instinctive discomfort and distaste for various forms of "body art".

That those who prominently display such vandalisms upon their bodies also tend to engage in less civilized behavior helps reinforce my gut prejudice.

No. Modern conservatives cannot, which is why true political conservatives are radicals in their desire for freedom and upright behavior.

Being that any entity in a position of power/fame strictly adheres to the PC ethos, this type of thinking will continue. Where do you talk about stuff like HBD? If you do it at work, you will be seen by HR fairly quickly. Hell, if you tell a woman she looks nice, that's sexist and you will lose your job. Kobe Bryant can't even yell "faggot" at a ref. He had to apologize or else he would lose endorsements (not to mention he is black, meaning it took all of 2 days for the public to get over it).

Same thing in the political realm. We all know this. Trump is at least a step in the right direction. Even though he is not a conservative, he is much less PC than any politician. This could open the door down the road for true conservatives to speak freely (somewhat).

So, where can one talk non-PC? The internet, normally anonymously, which does not do much for bringing the reactionary sphere into public discourse. By continuing to comment on major news sites, we can show that perhaps WE are in the majority. We have to have a gradual takeover, like the 60s counterculture, of the media, academia, etc. Or, let America fall on its ass and rebuild. The latter may be quicker.

Remember, WE are now the counterculture. Even though I believe there are more people like One and the frequent commenters on here than the others, most only talk about these issues behind closed doors. Liberals want us to believe that everyone thinks like them. They have won the battle over the last 40 years. As long as people continue to cower to PC, I don't see how we can break through. I hate to be cynical here, but I believe this to be true.

There is a gender base to PC. White and other races women are generally very PC and fans of "diversity." If you are an average White guy you get screwed. It is hard to be a fan of a system that screws you every chance you get. Meanwhile White women do get a chance to lord it over Beta White guys, and so get patronage that buys them into the PC systems.

Incentives matter. They matter most of all. Your friend is a dinosaur, really, because White women have such a buy-in via incentives to PC that he's going the way of the dinosaurs.

This won't change unless Conservatives can clearly understand the problem (White women's incentives) and destroy the incentives, make White women as PC-punished as every White guy.

I don't see how conservatives can gain significant media traction. You have a few popular guys like Beck and Rush, who take plenty of heat, but any real attempt to take back the airwaves would result in a media firestorm shouting it down.

What's needed is conservative politicians who reject the left's memes and modes of speech. Right now, most conservative politicians try to fight the left by using the left's rhetoric, which is guaranteed to fail.

The NHL does ban fighting, inasmuch as fighting is an automatic ejection. The problem with the NHL is it's hard to make hockey popular outside the northern midwest and northeast, where the weather makes ice sports a natural fit.

My bad concering Blake Griffin, although there are very good white guys in the NBA. Manu Ginobli is one, Dirk Nowitzki is another, and the Gasol brothers are two more (all are foreigners). Kevin Love and "Psycho" T are shaping up to be great home-grown talent. And then you'll always have the role players, like Kyle Korver on the Bulls (or John Paxson or Steve Kerr back in MJ's day).

Once that happens, the elites will only be going through motions, and then it's only a matter of time.

Your Adam sounds fairly unintelligent, an indictment of conservativism among the masses. Much of the Tea Party are not intellectuals in any sense but are ordinary Americans obsessed with their money problems.Luckily they hate Obama.

HBD is almost entirely an Internet game because newspapers almost universally exclude honest discussion that is judged unPC. My St. Pete Times reports endlessly on terrible black crimes-mostly murder- while never publishing my letters. They usually show good photos of black perps while not mentioning their race in articles. They even showed a white woman covered with scar tissue after being burned almost to death by a jealous black boyfriend.Never will they generalize about black violence and never will they publish HBD letters. They are depraved accessaries of black crime even with their photographic excellence.

Liberalism won the war for public discourse and most ordinary Americans are both semi-literate and cowed by the PC atmosphere. Blacks and Hispanics, followed by poverty enterprises like Amscot Financial, pawn shops, and assorted bus services, spread throughout Florida's middle-class neighborhoods. Crime was always a major issue in Florida but now Hispanics and blacks sow their seeds in much nicer neighborhoods. You can foresee easily the gradual destruction of nice areas that will succumb to the usual array of carjackings, littering, and physical assaults.Decay blends nicely with the new digital signs informing transgressors of legal services to extricate them from their anti-social difficulties.

It would be impossible to tell what fraction of white America is awake to the devestation at their feet. Surely there is a silent majority here, but most don't read newspapers and even blogs like vdare, etc. are small puddles of discourse. AOL just promoted the black violence at the MacDonalds but that is rare. They, too, are liberal automatons. Liberals have all the power but I still donate to NumbersUSA and the National Association of Scholars, Judicial Watch, and other worthies. We need each other because the liberal meme created captive minds as did Bolshevik propaganda. The slaves of the Left, like political zombies, await their own demise.

Trew said...

@Corneilus Troost--
Very true about what's going on in some neighborhoods in FL and around the country. You can see these lower-middle to middle class neighborhoods slowly change as the NAMs move in. The housing crisis has made otherwise unaffordable neighborhoods now affordable to them. If your more expensive neighborhood doesn't change, then the NAMs at least get closer.

In my area of FL, neighborhoods w/ houses starting at $150K are still safe - 100% White and should stay that way. (Of course, that's $300K+ five years ago.) So, that's the starting price point.

Funny, as usual, the working blacks that I've known have actually told me that they're seeking to get out of their (black) neighborhoods...and then it starts.

Nice opening paragraph there Troost. It encapsulates you very well. It is...Troostian.

Whenever I read your comments I am always reminded of the following quotation of Thomas Mann:

I admire the proud and cold who go adventuring on the paths of great and demoniac beauty, and scorn "man" — but I do not envy them. For if anything is capable of making a poet out of a man of letters, it is this plebeian love of mine for the human, living, and commonplace. All warmth, all goodness, all humor is born of it, and it almost seems to me as if it were that love itself, of which it is written that a man might speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and yet without it be no more than sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal.

Pat Hannagan said...

You've expressed the problem well OSTDV.

In a phrase, it is what Chomsky termed: Manufacturing Consent

The advent of social media has occasioned a great opportunity for the conservative movement. Alternative forms of media have given the average citizen the opportunity to express himself, to interact with what was a one way dialogue. However, the very same internet is now making it far easier and documentable to track and store "thought crimes" expressed in that medium. Everyone knows it which is why the vast majority of people comment with aliases.

Anyone who cares for the movement must constantly remind themselves of the requirement to make face to face contact with our kind, as you have done with Adam. To promote the cause always and to promote other like minds with financial assistance, education, employment etc.

In my experience there are many out there just like Adam, people who are not "unintelligent" nor motivated by base concerns about money nor taxes alone (as if these were unsubstanial matters anyway). The great majority of people have become isolated and made to feel like pariahs via our mediums of social exchange when, in fact, we live in a vast oasis of fellows ready to act once their minds are set free.

Bravo OSTDV. A theme worth developing for sure.

john shaft said...

John above is strangely out to lunch. The NHL is not niche because of fighting. Fighting actually makes it more popular than it otherwise might be, as women in places like San Jose like it for just that reason. No, the reason hockey doesn't have wider popularity is that so few people ever grow up skating. Dedicated pro sports watchers are living vicariously, and almost every male at e.g. a baseball game played but hit the wall two or more levels short of the bigs.

Cornelius Troost said...

For Pat Hannagan,

It is a shame that the cause of whites must be sullied by the likes of you. If you could offer your ideas as OneSTDV does, without needing to degrade those you disagree with, it would count for more in the open arena of the bloggosphere.

Were you to read Homo americanus: Child of the Postmodern Age, you might grasp the array of problems facing my country. You apparently live elsewhere and come upon your views at long distance-not a good lens for discerning truth!

Ordinary Americans tend to be more religious and conservative, but C. Murray reports studies that demonstrate an inexorable decline in the functionality of poorer Americans. The bottom 20% are in real trouble and the 20% above them are starting to fall apart with increasing rapidity.Competition with 20+ Mexicans is only part of this tale of woe. The top 20%, including my daughter, live in a cocoon of wealth and privilege hardly noticing the signs of material erosion everywhere.

Conservativism as an ideology is not a game played by uneducated people. Politics itself is of little interest to many ordinary folks. They are usually obsessed with their immediate survival problems. In America wealth is distributed very unequally and the middle-class is faced with hard times they cannot handle satisfactorily.White America now encounters a well-financed set of foes in the media, politics, and academia that wishes them to basically disappear. Rather than name-calling and degrading, we who defend whites as a biological, historical, and social reality should discuss ideas-critically if necessary-to try to educate and unify. OneSTDV, along with Mangan and others, provides a wonderful forum for us.Surely we can rise up to the level of discourse he would expect of us.

Anonymous said...

Not true. They need them for their productivity. They just wish to transfer the fruits of their labor to themselves. This is just how Euro elites operated and that is why so many confident competent Europeans left; they could enjoy the fruits of their own labor.

Mr. Troost,

I've always admired your comments in the HBD blogosphere (plus anyone who writes a book that gets the praise of Hsu and Harpending is O.K. in my book), but I think you might have been too sensitive to Mr. Hannagan's mild criticism of your comment. To wit, you say to him: "[r]ather than name-calling and degrading, we who defend whites as a biological, historical, and social reality should discuss ideas-critically if necessary-to try to educate and unify."

With all respect, I thought Hannagan's comment to you was getting at the idea that we need to respect the dim and the high IQ both, as they have equal moral worth. We can, of course, be concerned with low IQ leading to social disfunction and want and encourage those with low IQ to be disciplined and hard-working no matter their lot in life. And we shouldn't give in to PC notions of excellence and achievement just to make low-IQ people feel good.

But they are people with wants, hopes and needs and they must not be casually dismissed -- we are all God's children. Quickly reading over Hannagan's website I think he understands HBD, but at the same time, comes at these issues from a religious or humane perspective which demands that we treat the least among us as those with the most (again, from an ethical and moral perspective).

Here is another quote, from the novel, A Canticle For Leibowitz which is an exchange between a priest and an arrogant da Vinci character in the second novella, that shows Christianity to be the truest humanism. Thon Taddeo, the great scientist, points out the window at a peasant who has just passed by:

"Look. Can you bring yourself to believe that that brute is the lineal descendant of men who supposedly invented machines that flew, who traveled to the moon...? Can you believe there were such men?...Look at him!" the scholar persisted. "No, but it's too dark now. You can't see the syphilis outbreak on his neck, the way the bridge of his nose is being eaten away. Peresis. But he was undoubtedly a moron to begin with. Illiterate, superstitious, murderous....Look at him, and tell me if you see the progeny of a once-mighty civilization? What do you see?"

"The image of Christ," grated the monsignor, surprised at his own sudden anger. "What did you expect me to see?"

Cornelius Troost said...

For Fake Herzog:

Thanks for your well-considered remarks with which I agree in general. Hannagan is a mixed bag of harsh put-downs and occasionally worthwhile remarks. His hatred of Jews is so extreme that whatever Christian morality you discovered must be highly qualified indeed. He will likely deny any hatred because rationalization is his primary skill.I will grant you that I overreacted and appreciate your perceptive response.

I suggest you go to my website: www.apesorangels.com and send me your address if you are inclined. I want to give you a free copy of the book because it is likely to be appreciated by someone of your intelligence. You are free to criticize it publically if you wish, but all HBD'ers need to read it to gain some foundational insight. You will note that I defend Christian morality while acknowledging my personal atheism.Atheism defies the faith instinct of the masses so I cannot join the Dawkins parade on that count. I would enjoy hearing from you and others on the merits of the book or lack thereof.

Pat Hannagan said...

Herzog, Troost is reacting more to my "harsh put-downs" at Mangans than my truth missile here. Some times I do go over the top, perhaps, maybe, as with my most recent rebuff of Troost at Mangans. So, in his defense, he isn't being "too sensitive".

Troost: have you ever considered that comments of yours like "his hatred of Jews is so extreme" just might get my gander up? That to me is a "put-down" and if there is one thing that I excel at in life it is 'upping the ante' and "put-downs". Can't help it really, most likely a genetic thing.

There are many things I "hate" in life Troost and Jews are but one of many. Why should the Jews get exemptions? You could call me out where I am wrong or irrational then correct me. But, as was spoken, "If I said something wrong," ... "testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?"

With regard "hate", I see life more as Hesse's "Der Steppenwolf": love is merely the opposite of hate and vice versa. Neither are morally right nor wrong. Excessive love could be a major character flaw as much as excessive hate would be. Both destroy with equal outcome.

In resolution I am with David Stove's recommendation, as with racism and bigotry, that we divide through for them.

But I won't stop calling it as I see it, with the Jews or any other group like the Catholic Church. And I will continue to verify my words with citation and demonstration.

For instance, I am sure both you and I agree with Auster's words here, but would you likewise agree with me that:

Try to imagine the mental state of a white person who is toiling in the conflict you describe. He has negative thoughts about Jewish violence, Jewish job performance, Jewish racial preferences, Jewish anti-white racism, and so on, but he can never speak these thoughts aloud, and he can never even allow himself to think them clearly to himself. Even I, who have written a fair amount about the phenomenon of white guilt, cannot fully picture to myself what it's like to live day to day in such falsity, to be always maneuvering and negotiating inside one's own head between certain thoughts that one has and the absolute imperative not to speak or think those thoughts because they are evil.
?

Of course you wouldn't. That would make me full of hate and, what's that?! An anti-semite!!!? Good God man. Not even Metallica ever stooped to such levels of pure Satanity.
