My Trip to the Liberal Twilight Zone

I have a close friend that I'll dub Bizarro OneSTDV (BOS) as he epitomizes the middle class SWPL liberal. This past week we went to a bar together and, invariably, politics came up in the conversation. FWIW: I don't much enjoy extemporaneous arguments, primarily because I always get frustrated thinking about counter points I failed to offer.

In the midst of our conversation, he regurgitated the standard liberal tripe. Though I hesitate in calling what he said "liberal", as that term inadequately describes the delusion therein. So I give you, partly for my own purposes of commiseration, actual quotes uttered by BOS. (If necessary, context is in italics and commentary in bold.)
"But we are a nation of immigrants". [See AE's devastating critique of this neologism.]

Regarding the connection between Islam and terrorism: "What about Timothy McVeigh?" [Once again, liberals don't understand rudimentary statistics.]

After I supported extremely limited immigration: "But our diversity and tolerance is what makes us great." [Finland says otherwise.]

After I said we should profile Muslims in airports: "We're America, we're better than that". [I guess better dead than "racist"?]

Scoffing at notion that pre-1970 immigrants all happened to be European: "Oh the good kind right?"

"Anyone can come here and be anything they want to be. That's what America helps people do."

"It's so hard to immigrate here, even legally."

"At its worst, government regulation hurts the flow of money and hinders entrepreneurship. At its worst, corporate freedom kills people. I'll take the former."

In regards to why the TSA scans everyone and not just Muslims: "Everyone is being profiled because big corporations need to sell their scanning machines". [There are currently 250 scanners nationwide.]

In response to my opposition to unfettered immigration: "Oh, so we can have all those dumb white people." [I wonder who scores the worst on intelligence exams? And here's statistics on Mexican educational attainment.]

IMO, the liberal/utopian vision of society provides those who truly believe in it certain social advantages. There is a reason why it is so infectious.

If a kid grows up in an environment where dampening the "tribalism module" in his brain consistently provides him with pleasurable outcomes, he will grow up to become like your friend.

Ugh, I feel your pain. Leftists are pretty good at fast-talking and interrupting. If they shut their mouths and opened their ears the intracranial pressure buildup would be explosive.

Poor kids.

Anonymous Coward, I'm sure you're right about the ahite women. I've never known an ahite woman with a sensible immigration limiting plan. Fortunately, most Americans fall into the bhite, chite, or the majority dhite category, and they all want less immigration.

I'll show my polling data when you show yours.

Get educated.

You need to embarrass the guy--tell him what the root of his beliefs are all about--that he refuses to study the data because he's intellectually lazy; thus, he clings to the psychological warm and fuzzy dogma about human nature like a 10 year old girl does. He's supremely ignorant, in other words. Have you no knowledge of the research, sir? No intellectually curiosity?

Tell him he's biologically unfit.

A few years ago I was on a BART train going through Oakland listening to two Critical Mass types. The guy with the scarf on his head says, "I don't understand people who don't think we're our brothers' keeper."

That's the trouble with having friends when you're as smart as you are, One STDV. It's hard finding anybody smart enough to understand and appreciate your perspectives. When and if you do, because most of the really smart people have spent a long time in the liberal educational credentialing machine, frequently they have CrimeStop thought-blockers that prevent them from considering, just considering, even the most reasonable HBD-based positions.

Man, that guy is functioning at what educators call level one on Bloom's taxonomy. Too bad all the crap he memorized isn't even true. Score one useful idiot not for liberal education (that include grammar, logic and rhetoric necessary for free citizens), but for commie totalitarian race replacement indoctrination hiding like a wolf in the liberal sheep's clothing.

I mock a leftist's crummy proofreading, and then the post that I mocked gets deleted. *blush*

And the first (remaining) Anonymous made a good point with the first link: "illegal" really is an inaccurate, clumsy word to apply to undocumented aliens. They shouldn't be called "illegal aliens" because no person is illegal.

They should be called foreign scofflaws.

@ JHB:

Very well said (and not just because you called me smart :). Though in my friend's case, it's moreso a class issue. He views conservatism and race realism as the domain of unrefined white trash. So he couldn't possibly believe anything like that because he's not a white trash idiot.

@ BLode:

Yea sorry. I deleted it before I saw your response.

I've found that you can sometimes slip past their crimestop detectors if you couch your arguments in the right terms. For example, in a recent conversation my liberal friend vociferously denied that any immigrant anywhere in America had ever received welfare and accused me of parroting "Rush Limbaugh Talking Points". After I explained that the greedy corporations are using taxpayer-funded programs to subsidize their cheap labor force, he was much more receptive to the idea.

On a side note, LOL at Anonymous citing change.org and some unhinged anti-white blog and saying "Get educated." More like "Get indoctrinated."

For 20 years I had a friend who exemplified almost every liberal cliche. From a rich family, attended private high school and then Brown, wrote a couple unpublished novels, drove a Saab with an "Impeach Bush" sticker on it. One day in his car the subject of race came up, and he said, "I think maybe black people aren't as smart as whites." Floored me.

When fighting with Liberals, you have to ask questions which avoid their canned responses.

For instance, when fighting about the alleged "inevitable prosperity" of our equals in Africa, you have to ask a question like this - "Why is it that companies choose to set up manufacturing in India or China, but never in Africa?"

This will force them to actually do some thinking on their own. Then, when they are finally taken out of their comfort zone, you can start sneaking in terms like "human capital" or "management talent pool" before eventually moving on to the real issue at hand - IQ.

We are a nation of settlers.

Our forefathers settled a undeveloped land, a big forrest really, and turned it into the world's foremost nation in a mere 200 years. The people who came since 1965 came to a ready-made place with electricity, paved roads, telephones, enforced laws, and environmental protections.

The populace here at the time didn't get to vote on their presence. .

John Pistole, the TSA head, used Eric Randolph and Timothy McVeigh as excuses for the scanners. Randolph and McVeigh didn't strike through airports. Randolph only successfully killed an abortion doctor. Richard Jewell, a hero the media treated like a traitor, found Randolph's Olympic bomb. McVeigh drove a rented van into the Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Neither were on a plane. Scanners would have not stopped them, even if they were on buses and subways.

Have better arguments than liberals and point-by-point, go down the line, and slaughter them. Prove them wrong on every single point. Suggest websites and blogs that have the truth. Its all you can do. Most of them are liberal for percieved social approval. We are a nation of weak-minded people who are doggie-trained to not want to be "the bad guy". Conservatives are constantly framed as the bad guy.

OneSTDV,

The advice you dispensed previously regarding holiday get-togethers with family members applies here as well. Put the Socratic method to use (ie, If over half the immigrant population in the border states are Mexican, aren't the border states going to start resembling Mexico? How did unregulated immigration work out for Native Americans? Who does the jobs Americans won't do in Montana?--and I'm sure you can come up with more artful, less polemical questions than that). It's the best way to expose mindless cliches for being just that, and it disables the leftist's ability to demonize you--after all, you're just asking questions.

"But we are a nation of immigrants."

All nations are nations of immigrants. Can you give an example of one that isn't? As far as I know there are no historical examples of people ever growing out of the ground. To say that we are a nation of immigrants is like saying we are a nation of people. So is every other nation on the planet. Whatever makes America unique and a desirable place to live can't be found in the platitude, "we are a nation of immigrants."

"It's so hard to immigrate here, even legally."

America admits more legal immigrants every year than the rest of the world combined. This does not even include the number of people who come here illegally.

"But our diversity and tolerance is what makes us great."

No they don't. "Diversity" and "tolerance" are the only things liberals love about America.

So give him some good Blue Blood conservatist writing....like that of Wm. F. Buckley.

It's like I said: he's really ignorant as in "uninformed" and incredibly provincial. Oh, that's another thing libs hate--when you show them that *they* are the provincial, unsophisticated ones.

HUH? You mean he doesn't know that, at least in California, an illegal needn't provide any proof of legal residency in order to get welfare for the child? Just needs to provide some documentation that the kid was born here. And, if the woman has another kid, there's an increase in the check.

Now, going even further, many eligibility workers in this, the Golden State, will even look the other way if the kid's docs of birth don't look exactly right.

Stop by any town in the Valley these days and you will see people who speak only a few words of English with a line of little ones in tow, handing over what used to be called food stamps (forget their new euphemistic name) to the checkers (who all speak Spanish.)
Any Food-4-Less will do. Little Mexico. Check out the produce section too.

What's up with that friend of yours?

Actually, the Auntie Zeituni fiasco should have exploded the "illegal immigrants don't get welfare" myth by now, but conservatives have not chosen to call attention to the situation.

It wouldn't matter. To these people, anything that conflicts with their worldview is automatically a lie, a distortion, or outright propaganda by the vast right-wing conspiracy. Even if it's printed in the New York Times, it's just more proof that the mainstream media has been co-opted by the all-powerful Right. To penetrate that mindset, you have to make your point fit their worldview at least in a superficial way. But you can alter their thinking this way, and they will change their positions without thinking they've changed their mind. That's the key, really. You can't convince them that they're wrong about anything, so just keep telling them they're right while adjusting what they think they're right about.
