I'd say it's not any worse than crap like The Real World and perhaps not as stupefyingly depressing at shows like The Real Housewives.
The people on Jersey Shore have no delusions about themselves. Besides vapid concerns over hair products and "avoiding grenades (ugly women)", they're almost devoid of status seeking. Compare this to the faux deep metamorphoses that pepper the Real World and the characters chosen for these depictions of modern youth.
I have no thoughts on Jersey Shore, except that its popularity, like that of Real Housewives of ___ and that ilk are signs of the acute degradation of our culture.
The appeal of Jersey Shore is the cast itself. They love to party, they are funny, and they don't take themselves too seriously. Most of the cast comes from a middle class background and people have a better time relating to them than say the SWPL's and the rich blacks on the Real World. Before the cast goes to the Shore or Miami, the audience meets their family which is very Italian (large, both parents, lots of cousins, etc).
"The Situation" and DJ Pauly D are natural alphas and they never try to get a serious gf on the show, they know that they are famous and they will use that fame to bang as many chicks as possible. So despite their blowouts and bronzer, these guys are cool and living out the single man's dream. The girls like "J-WOWW" and "Snooki" also take female drama to a different level. They fight. A lot. It's a real turn on for guys to watch hot chicks fighting and swearing at each other. In most reality shows you usually have the cast fighting amongst each other and creating needless drama among themselves. Not here. The girl who was creating the most drama got kicked out like on the 3rd episode and the only serious drama that goes on between the cast is between the two who became gf and bf. Other than that, they all look out for each other and if anyone gets in trouble in a club, the other steps in to fight for them.
Jersey Shore is great reality drama, probably the best on television. It takes aspects from Mystery's show (which was unwatchable to me) and combines it with the drama from a lot of female oriented shows like Housewives and the Hills but makes it more explosive. Whomever was in charge of casting for this show should have gotten a million dollar raise. If the same concept was done with a different cast it may have not become as popular as it is today.
People are offended because it promotes an ethnic stereotype of Italian-Americans (though at least 2 of the characters are not Italian at all). It can be an entertaining show. Certainly more entertaining for me than Real World, Real Housewives, BIg Brother, etc. PaulyD and Situation are sleazy pump-and-dump guys, Vinnie is young but becoming a stud, Ronnie has an anger problem.
The girls are mostly trash with little redeeming quality, but Snooki can be funny.
Sad part is if you take the average IQ of the Shore housemates and compare it to these other shows, I'm not sure that Shore doesn't beat some of the others out.

Turn off the TV, it's toxic.
I don't know what it is but there is something about the Jersey Shore that pulls me in. This is surprising because I usually loath reality tv.
I was preparing for traffic court and I wanted some background noise when the first episode came on. I was mesmerized for the full two hours.

So this show is different from the Real World how?
