Democratic Party: Too Liberal
Gallup Poll on Americans' attitude towards the ideology of major political parties:
A Gallup Poll finds a statistically significant increase since last year in the percentage of Americans who describe the Democratic Party's views as being "too liberal," from 39% to 46%. This is the largest percentage saying so since November 1994, after the party's losses in that year's midterm elections. But independents are still justifiably concerned about the Republican party, probably due to the transparency of religious influence and a decrease in "Goldwater/Buckley" conservatism (hat tip to Lover of Wisdom).
Independents are a little more likely to say the Republican Party is too conservative than to say the Democratic Party is too liberal, in a slight departure from the results among all Americans.

This might be the case for now, but the general problem isn't the transparency of religious influence, but that the Republican party is standing less for conservatism—they are becoming bunch of spineless mama's boys. Remember that the party nominated McCain, and it is now acting the least religiously transparent in recent history.
Right now, the social and religious conservatives are slowing leaving that party and are becoming independents. There is a power shift occurring in the Republican party. You are hearing from so-called Republican pundits that the party is "too conservative" (you hear the dumb blond version of this from Megan McCain), and it is slowing becoming liberal-light. The conservatives are seeing this and are simply saying: "OK. You want less conservatism? Fine. We'll go our own way."
I predict the Independent base will be have a larger religious and social conservative base in four years. The Democrats will be more progressive than ever, the Republicans will be progressive-light.
I think in ten years libertarianism will become much more popular, but the evangelical-protestants will be behind that movement, mirroring the views of the founding fathers.
I think the greater threat to the country is the religious folk in the dem. party who want to "care for the poor" and "social justice". These are the fans of AA and welfare and open borders who want to give away taxpayers' money as charity to citizen and foreigner alike.
The MSM has made a big deal of vilifying religious conservatives as dangerous nuts and beatifying religious liberals as pious saints.
Ha, the ratio of uses of "social justice" to "protect the troops" in a prayer is a good gauge of its deliverer's politics.
